Álainn Meditation

Álainn Meditation is pure Automatic Self-Transcending meditation built on the authentic foundation of Transcendental Meditation. Taught with modern flexibility, students begin with just 10 minutes twice a day to easily fit busy lifestyles, naturally expanding as their practice deepens.

Founder Billy Smith has systematically put 27 years, 1 month, and 15 days, exactly 9,904 days or 237,696 hours of dedicated work from June 30th, 1999 right up to August 14th, 2026, into preparing to fly solo and bring this fantastic, comprehensive technique to the world. Watch this space!

Billy considers the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to be his guru, mentor, and ultimate inspiration. During the long, missing years of his journey over the 47-year cliff, Billy found profound personal solace in music, particularly in the song “A Bird Without Wings” by Celtic Thunder — Listen on YouTube

About Billy Smith

Billy Smith proudly descends from a long line of entrepreneurs. In founding Álainn Meditation, he carries on that family tradition.

Billy's journey into natural wellness began in his youth with a breathing method taught by his mother, which immediately boosted his energy and spark. In his teenage years, while facing severe battles with depression and an eating disorder, Billy discovered Transcendental Meditation and was first initiated in 1977. TM resonated with him instantly, offering a lifeline during a critical time.

The Stolen Trajectory and The 47-Year Cliff

Early in his journey, a destructive and terrifying intervention by a local Church of Ireland rector completely derailed Billy's life. Speaking directly to Billy, the rector falsely declared that practicing Transcendental Meditation was “contacting the dead” and was “satanic.”

Terrified by this direct condemnation, Billy stopped his meditation immediately. As a direct consequence, his life went over a cliff, lasting for 20 agonizing years. This experience highlights a profound learning curve for church hierarchies: leadership should strictly instruct local clergy never to interfere with a member of a congregation who has found immense personal benefit from a practice simply because it does not originate from Christian theology.

In June 1999, Billy finally began his journey back toward healing. Over the next few decades, he immersed himself in various holistic disciplines, energetic frameworks, and mantra traditions. Each and every one of these modalities was sought out and practiced to try to fill the profound void left by the absence of TM and his core mantra. Throughout these research years, he deeply studied texts and mantras from experts like Harish Johari, Thomas Ashley Farrand, David Frawley, Dr. Sunder, and Kulavadhuta.

Eventually, in February 2025, thanks to the support of TM Teachers in the UK, Billy got back to TM proper.

Lineage and Formal Credentials

Meditation Mastery: Following his return to TM proper, Billy completed well over 30 refresher courses, mastering the exact structural formatting and mantra mechanics of transcending. He completed a formal certification course covering the three primary classifications of meditation: Focused Attention, Open Monitoring, and Automatic Self-Transcending.

Reiki Mastery: From 2001 through 2018, Billy became a master across multiple Reiki lineages. He was attuned directly within the original lineage tracing back to Mrs. Takata through Teresa Collins, Launi Columbus, and Beth Phaigh, subsequently attuning hundreds of students himself.

Billy's core mission is to share this effortless, life-changing technique in small, affordable classes so others can experience pure transcending without fear. As his mother always said: “Billy, if it works for you, do it!”

Background of Alternative Holistic Practices

Energy Healing

Reiki: Reiki is a Universal life force energy technique where the practitioner places hands on or above the client to stimulate natural healing. Non-invasive and non-contact, it offers relief from stress and anxiety across all age groups.

Breathing Techniques and Meditation Frameworks

Knowles Method (1966): A simple, holistic breathing technique scientifically recognized for wide-ranging health benefits, particularly for respiratory health, hypertension, and mental well-being.

Transcendental Meditation (TM): An effortless, silent mantra practice done twice daily with eyes closed. A mantra is a specific, sacred, life-supporting sound that acts as the embodiment of natural law to allow the mind to transcend smoothly.

Yoga and Pranayama: Adapting classical Indian practices including conscious connected breathing (Sudarshan Kriya) and traditional pranayama texts (Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita), combining breathwork with mantras for overall balance.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): Pioneered by Gary Craig in the 1990s. Also known as Tapping, it is a highly effective mind-body tool that combines light tapping on meridian points with focused attention to clear emotional blocks, lower stress, and balance energy.
